The Transfiguring Places

You left me sunset, the light
Of the polestar; to save me from summer
You left me the north, a strip of land
In that sad direction
To which I'm always returning. Among
Such articles I inherit, the gift
I brought you, a pair of socks, one size
Too big, for that is how fathers
Appear to sons, grown old themselves
In rented houses far from home.
I look at your hiding places again:
A shaving mirror; an aunt's profile.
